[It isn't very often that Nick Fury could say he was worried. Not very often at all. But in this case he can honestly and legitimately say he is very worried. Loki is who knows where doing who knows what with the Tesseract and he has to try to organize a group of people - most of whom want nothing to do with him or SHIELD - to save the world.

Yeah. This is going to go SO well.

He sighs, picking up his coffee mug and looking at the contents disdainfully before setting it down again. All the technology in the world and the coffee on the Helicarrier still has no flavor whatsoever. Or maybe he's just that tired. It's probably been 3 nights since he's had more than a couple hours of sleep between status updates. He runs a hand over his head and picks up his earpiece, fitting it back over his ear. As if anyone could get a good night's sleep while the world was in as much danger as it is.

He presses a button and calls Coulson. He doesn't even wait for pleasantries. As soon as he hears the line connect he starts speaking]

Status update? We're low on time and I'm about to start handing out tardy slips.

You know. You're the one who still holds out the most hope that they'll all find some way to make this work.

Because they will. They've all got the capacity to be something greater than themselves.

[He chuckles. So naive, Coulson. But that might be just what they need.]

I hope you're right. There are too many factors outside my control for me to be really happy with it but as long as I can keep the counsel off our radar we should be fine.
